Q.1.1 Structuralism and Functionalism are founded in the roots of Psychology how ever these concepts still have importance in the classroom today (Castle & Buckler, 2018). As educators we should be aware of these approaches within the classroom.

In the form of a table compare and contrast Structuralism and Functionalism and give a brief appropriate classroom example of each.

You are a teacher at a local school. You have a student in your class, named Sam, Sam is 7 years old. Sam is a shy girl and has one special friend who is also a student in your class. Sam arrives at school in a cheerful mood and participates in individual class activities with enthusiasm. Lately you notice that Sam seems quite un settled and agitated during group work activities in class.

Behaviourism as later developed by B.F. Skinner (1904–90), focused on behaviour which is observable and measurable (Castle & Buckler, 2018). Skinner (1938, 1953) focused his attention on the effects of those acts, something we recognise today in part when we talk of the ABCs in the classroom: Antecedents Behaviour, Consequences

  • Differentiate between Classical conditioning, and Operant conditioning.
