VI. Enquiry 1 – Individual Report Marking Rubric the amount of detail that you include for each section of the report should be guided by the weighting of marks allocated on the marking rubric. It is important for you to be aware of and note where marks are allocated to etc. it’s best to continually consult this document you when working on the assignment to ensure you are addressing the criteria.

2.Decide which social determinant of health (SDH) you will be discussing in the report.

3.Be sure to lock in some personal ‘checkpoint’ dates throughout the enquiry so that you can remain on track and the assignment is not left to the last week or couple of days to complete. Please use this DAILY PLANNER as a guide to assist you in planning for the successful completion of the assessment task.

We recommend starting with the ‘BODY’ of the report as opposed to the ‘introduction’. Your introduction will need to highlight key points that are discussed in the report and you will only be able to identify these key points after writing your body paragraph.

Report Body :
Describe and analyse how each of the social determinants of health contribute to the difference in life expectancy between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
This might include but not limited to the impacts of accessibility equitability cultural sensitivity etc’.

Based on findings from your research, there should be a clear analysis of why each SDH directly or indirectly impacts on the life expectancy of the Australian Indigenous community’.

Please note:
Try not to focus too much on concepts that are outside of the immediate SDH topics e.g. politics as this can divert your argument away from key determinants that influence individual and group differences in health

It is now time to begin researching your SDH topic:

1.Students should first consider the suggested questions listed under each SDH within the Enquiry 1 Individual Report Assessment Guide Rubric & FAQ’s document. These questions may contribute towards your overall response discussion of the SDH and its impact on the life expectancy gap between Indigenous and non Indigenous Australians.

Please remember these questions are suggestions and therefore you are not limited to these. If you choose to include other focuses in your discussion, please ensure this is reflected in the structure out line that is presented in the introduction. This will set out expectations of the piece to the reader.

For each SDH you may like to follow the suggested structure below We have used CULTURE as an example to illustrate this:

Selected SDH: Culture
Considering the evidence (questions directly taken from the assessment guidelines document):
1. What might be the cultural reasons for the gap in life expectancy? Consider both the importance of cultural beliefs and values of the Indigenous community and the cultural competency of the broader community.
2. How might language be a barrier to health care for Indigenous individuals?
3. Consider cultural beliefs about health and well-being, how might affect the under standing of health among the Indigenous community?

Once again please ensure you have read through the FAQ’s before you begin as the document provides some examples of key terms and databases which are useful to use within Health Science.

To get you started on your search, let’s begin with the first suggested question on the culture SDH:

1. What might be the cultural reasons for the gap in life expectancy?

Step 1 – Go to the La Trobe Library website. Decide on the search tool to would like to start using e.g. Library Search tool, Google Scholar or a particular database. See image below for each of the options in a tab above the search box:

Step 2 – Consider a list of key words or phrases to enter into your search. These key words are derived from the question itself and the topic context. See highlighted words in the question: What might be the cultural reasons for the gap in life expectancy (i.e. Indigenous vs non-Indigenous)?

Step 3 – From these words try to think of other synonyms that may be useful to research as they mean the same things: For example cultural could have synonyms such as culture traditions background history ethos beliefs values etc. Think of similar words for each of your key words in your question/surrounding your SDH.

Step 4 – Once you have developed a search strategy, you can start your literature search. Simply type your selected key terms or phrases into the library search box or Google.

Search to reveal relevant search results (full text peer-reviewed articles will be available for you to access. If you are using a database see the Enquiry 1 Individual Report FAQ’s for a list of Health Sciences data bases then you can group words together and search them at the same time. Please note this is an advanced option and is not expected in first year, however if you would like to learn about it you can find out more information via this

It’s now time to consider how you will arrange information in your report and begin drafting your body paragraph.

Once you have collated all the research on your selected SDH, you then need to make a brief plan for how you will structure your SDH paragraph so that it reads fluently covers all necessary content and links to the next paragraph seamlessly. Your plan will inevitably be derived from the research you have gathered how ever as a guide we will use the suggested questions to provide an example for you. As a guide the culture SDH paragraph should discuss the following points:

1. Cultural traditions of Indigenous individuals
2. The impact of Indigenous individuals’ cultural beliefs on health and wellbeing
3. Language barriers influencing health care for Indigenous individuals

Each of the above needs to be compared and contrasted to non-Indigenous individuals to develop a comprehensive discussion related to the existing life expectancy gap.

Be sure to consider that all information that you are planning to include in your body paragraph meets the criteria.

2.Be sure to plan to discuss how the selected SDH is impacting on health and in turn life expectancy for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. A great way to do this is through the use of examples from the literature which offers comparisons and contrasts between the two groups. You may also like to use statistics to highlight disparities between the two groups again illustrating the life expectancy gap that exists.

3.Finally it is critical to link back to the topic in question the life expectancy gap between Indigenous and non- Indigenous Australians. This will highlight a critical analysis of the selected SDH and should be evident in the planning of each SDH paragraph.Keep in mind you only have 300 words to discuss your selected SDH so its important you take the time to consider what is significant to include in the body paragraph i.e. statistics and quotes etc.

1.Once the body paragraph is finalised, move onto the recommendation.

1. Your recommendation will need to be based on your research of the SDH in the context of the existing life expectancy gap You will need to consider a recommendation that are not only relevant but also realistic.

Please note your recommendation must have a supportive argument sustained by evidence and flow on link to from your analysis of the SDH.

2.Write/prepare the remaining sections:
1. Conclusion (see Enquiry 1 Individual Report FAQ’s)
2. Introduction (see Enquiry 1 Individual Report FAQ’s)
3. Cover page (see Assessment tile > Assignment Cover Page & Declaration Form)
4. Check report format according to APA 7 writing style
5. Proofread completed document
