The assessment
In Week 3 we look at the drug use experience and the three elements of which it is comprised drug set and setting. For this assessment consider these three elements and apply them to one substance and explain how these elements may interact to cause either a negative or positive experience related to that substance. For example, you may choose alcohol and decide to focus upon alcohol related violence. Therefore you need to consider the drug alcohol the set or who is contributing to the violence and the setting what environ mental factors either physical or social. How do these three elements come together to explain alcohol-related violence?

This assessment is worth 30 marks, with marks allocated using three criteria:
1. Effect resultant from substance use : A clear explanation justification and discussion of the chosen effect should be given. The audience should under stand why this effect is important – this means that your discussion should incorporate a range of references in order to justify the effect you have chosen to focus upon.
2. Elements of the drug use experience : A clear explanation and discussion of the three elements of the drug use experience should be given. The audience should understand what these are and how they contribute to the experience, and thus the effect you have chosen.

3. Professionalism of writing, referencing and presentation : The assignment should be carefully edited with no mistakes in your spelling, punctuation, syntax or grammar. Careful presentation of your wok is important to ensure accurate communication with the reader. Individual statements should be clearly articulated and sentences well constructed and unambiguous. This allows the reader to focus on the meaning and the key messages of your arguments.
The style of writing should be appropriate for an academic audience. Referencing of source material allows the reader to assess how persuasive and credible your arguments are and builds the reader’s confidence that your arguments are based on evidence and not just anecdote or your own assumptions. Citations should be appropriately located in the text and fully detailed in a reference list, in a consistent and correct format.

There are two ways you can start this assessment: 1) think of either a harm/experience/outcome you want to investigate, and then look at the three elements and their contribution, or 2) decide upon a substance to focus upon and then look at the harms/experiences/outcomes that may come from these. There are no pros or cons to how you start this assessment but my advice would be to be flexible with what you want to look at. In other words, don’t make this assessment too hard for yourself.

While we haven’t looked at harms in great detail yet you should be able to investigate some of these at this stage of the unit. Don’t forget – you may want to consider a positive experience that comes from using a particular substance. So consider a positive experience and look at the three elements and their contribution, or decide upon a substance and then look at the positive experiences which may come from use. You can also look at a negative experience if you wish. However, it’s just one experience, not two or more.
