Health Economics Assessment
You should perform a critical appraisal using your chosen methodology, before reporting the methods and findings of your appraisal on a research poster and recording a video presentation.
Learning outcomes to be assessed, you should be able to:
• Demonstrate knowledge and skills in the principles of using a variety of types of evidence and show an understanding of the links between evidence and practice.
• Demonstrate a systematic and in-depth understanding of how to select an appropriate perspective and time horizon for costing sources of data and methods to estimate resource use associated with healthcare interventions.
• Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of criteria for defining good methods to measure and value health outcomes.
• Critically apply appropriate criteria to assess quality of available evidence and economic models (quality assurance and validation).
• Critically apply economic evaluation techniques to inform decision making.
• Gather critically appraise and synthesise public health and health promotion related information drawn from a wide range of sources.
• Communicate effectiveness and cost-effectiveness evidence.
All assessments on this course aim to enable you to gain experience in different methods of communicating information. In this instance you will present both a poster and also a short presentation to camera. In all assessments we aim to assess you against how well you have met the learning outcomes. We will also give you marks for using the method of presentation well.
Health Economics Assessment
Part A (70% of total marks): You should produce a poster (A3 size: 11 x 17 inches in a PDF
format) based on your critical appraisal of the above article.
i. The poster must include the following components, which should relate to aspects of your critical appraisal:
Background Methods Results Discussions Policy implications
ii. Use of images including graphs and charts are encouraged. Please follow best practice guidelines on plagiarism while using images off the internet.
iii. When creating the poster, please give particular attention to:
• The context in which the original study was designed
• Your approach to your review, in particular:
o Consider whether to use a formal checklist (e.g. CASP).
If you have used any critical appraisal tool be clear which and why
o How you have applied the tool to inform your critique
iv. Consider the components of the study being reviewed:
o Type of economic evaluation
o Study objectives
o PICO (Population, Intervention Comparator and Outcomes)
o Study methods (consider all methodological attributes and limitations)
o Study results (consider main results and their uncertainty)
o Study conclusion (consider implications of any study limitation)
v. What could be concluded based on your own critique, the implications of your conclusions for future policy practice and research
vi. List of references to be included in the poster (max number of references allowed=6)
Health Economics Assessment
Part B (30% of total marks): Make an oral presentation of your poster on a video recording (3 to 4 minutes long).
• The aim of this presentation is to demonstrate your oral communication skills in addition to understanding and criticality. You should summarise the study and your methods and make sure to focus on critical aspects of your appraisal.
• You can choose how to structure the presentation, but it will be useful to go back to the learning outcomes and examine them to ensure you are able to demonstrate you have achieved them. This means showing your understanding of the methods of economic evaluation and displaying your analytical ability and critical evaluation skills.
• You must record yourself facing the camera and we must be able to both see and hear you. The quality must be sufficient for us to be able give you marks for what you are presenting. We recommend you use Zoom to record the presentation and you can share the poster produced in Part A whilst you present.
• You should not produce any further written accompaniment, including presentation slides. Present based on what appears in Part A of your submission. You may choose to verbally expand on some of the detail on the poster.
• Be clear about the purpose of your video. With only a short amount of time you must communicate concisely. Decide how to use the time wisely and do not focus on only one aspect of the poster or descriptive aspects. Make sure the video is no longer than 4:00 minutes in length.
