Construction Management Assessment

This project has two parts. In Part A, you can learn about the project. In Part B you can see the project requests including problems that need to be solved.

Construction Management Assessment

Part A – Project information:
The layout of a multi-storey commercial office building is shown in the figure below in which the floor system is supported on a frame of steel beams and columns.

Construction Management Assessment

Use the technical specifications given below for your calculations:

Construction Management Assessment

  • The beams consist of primary beams and secondary beams. The primary beams span in the x-axis with a length of 6000 mm in section AB, and a length of 9000 mm in section BC. The secondary beams span in the y axis with a length of 4500 mm. The beams (both the primary and secondary) used are 530UB92.4. Assume all the beams are simply supported (See below).
  • The columns used are 250UC89.5.
  • The total self-weight of the floor system consists of concrete slab, steel pan (i.e., metal floor),and the floor covering and ceiling. The load of the floor covering and the ceiling is . The live load is .

Part B – Project requests
1.Explain what dead load and live load are, provide an example of each.
2.Illustrate the loading path on one floor which is transmitted through the secondary and primary beams to the columns.
3.Calculate the uniformly distributed load due to the dead load of the floor system only.Express your answer in or kPa.
4.Calculate the linear load on the typical secondary beam I due to the dead load of the floor system only. Express your answer in
5.Calculate the total load applied on the typical secondary beam I (including its self-weight of the beam). Please consider this load combination ( to be applied.
6.Calculate the total load applied on the typical secondary beam J (including the self-weight of the beam). Please consider this load combination ( to be applied.
7.Calculate the total transferred load from the secondary beams to the primary beam K.
8.Calculate the total load applied on the primary beam K (including the self-weight of the beam). Please consider this load combination ( to be applied.
9.Calculate the total transferred load from the secondary beams to the primary beam L.
10.Calculate the total load applied on the primary beam L (including the self-weight of the beam). Please consider this load combination ( to be applied.
11.Calculate the total load applied on the typical secondary beam M (including the self-weight of the beam). Please consider this load combination ( to be applied.
12. Calculate the total load applied to the column B2 due to the combination of the floor system, the primary beams, the secondary beams, and the self-weight of the column itself on one floor. Please consider this load combination ( to be applied. Assume the height of the column to be 3m.
13.Determine the average normal stress in the column B2 based on the load computed in the previous question. Express your answer in.
14.If the mid-span vertical deflection of a secondary beam is , does this satisfy the floor beam mid-span serviceability criteria? (You can assume the maximum allowable serviceability deflection is Span/500).
