Through an examination of relevant literature connected with local and global networks students will build personal leadership capacity and understanding of what is required to effect change leadership and innovation in teaching. Learning outcomes are based on learning about leadership with in an established community of practice.

Contemporary Teacher leadership is the capstone unit for students in the Master of Teaching (Secondary). This unit is offered in a blended learning mode with one on-campus session in Week 1 and the remainder of the schedule is online lectures and tutorials .

The unit enables pre-service teachers to gain and demonstrate skills and knowledge in the following priority areas: Creating, sustaining and expanding communities of practice and developing on-going approaches to teacher leadership and change agency.

2.2 Approach to Learning

This unit is designed for flexible location learning from week 1.
As an online unit all lectures are presented in video form offering theory and supporting examples for achieving unit learning outcomes and the completion of assignments. The team-directed tutorial activities are designed using a teams approach to working as a community of practice. Zoom meetings with the tutor are designed for teams to report their discussions, questions and concerns through a chairperson following an agenda format to achieve learning outcomes and completion of assignments. Pre-service teachers are required by the School of Education to collect evidence to demonstrate they meet the Teacher Standards for Graduate Teachers. To meet this requirement, a collection of evidence is presented as a learning portfolio commenced in 102086 Designing Teaching and Learning and continued throughout completion of units in the Master of Teaching (Secondary). In this unit 102098 Contemporary Teacher Leadership, requires the final submission of the learning portfolio as a hurdle task in order to complete the course (Master of Teaching).
